Americans have been getting fatter for years, and with the increase in waistlines has come a surplus of conventional wisdom. Lots of meals used to have large amounts of carbs and protein. Those days are thankfully gone !
Basically, the first rule is to make sure that you are going to burn up all the calories you have consumed. Eat less, burn more. It does not really matter where the calories are coming from but it makes sense to limit your total amount of fat. Here are some tips on what to cut out or keep. Buy lots of fruit and vegetables. Watch out for salad dressings and cheeses which contain too much fat. You can always go for the low-fat option when buying milk, cheese and yogurt. A good healthy breakfast which includes low-fat dairy or non dairy products, eggs and lean meat is a great way to start the day.
Now for some good news. The National Weight Control Registry monitored successful weight loss stories and found that they were generally able to limit their daily calorie intake to 1,400. These were the people who had not only lost weight but they had not put it back on, even after five years ! University of Colorado also did some monitoring and they found examples of people who had lost 60 pounds and had kept it off for a minimum of five years! More good news is that if you are looking to keep down your calorie intake, it will be easier in some cities, such as New York, where restaurants are required to disclose the calorie information on their menus.
Exercise doesn't have to be a strenuous aerobic class; walking is just as beneficial. If you walk for 20 minutes a day, you can burn 100 calories and that means you can lose a pound every month. If you really want to move into top gear, you can exercise with weights or strength training as we also call it. Exercise with weight loss improves our chances of a longer, healthier, and probably happier life because it is going to prevent osteoporosis.
As well as enjoying the 'feel good' endorphins released during exercise, your spirits will lift and you will be encouraged to go on. The golden rule is, whatever form of exercise you do is that the energy output must be greater than the energy you take in through food and drink.
